Imagine transforming New York into a steampunk setting where people do not care about safety. When you enter Undermine, the new World of Warcraft zone that went live this week, you get that sense. I would love to tell you more about this never-before-seen goblin metropolis and its crazy, driveable vehicles. I had the pleasure of spearheading this zone’s design with my incredibly creative peers on the World of Warcraft team.

Deep Dive, Then D.R.I.V.E.

Adding a dynamic twist to the World of Warcraft experience, this new update introduces the D.R.I.V.E. feature, also known as our Dynamic and Revolutionary Improvement to Vehicular Experiences (we took that acronym and manifested it into that mouthful; you’re welcome! It’s sick).
This new feature allows players to travel on the ground with a mechanically intriguing G-99 Breakneck – otherwise known as World of Warcraft take on a hot rod. You will unlock this car pretty early while questing – complete “Eyes from Above” in the main campaign, then accept “No More Walkin’ Here” and progress through the Breakneck’s tutorial.
The design philosophy behind these vehicles is rooted in the art style of World of Warcraft goblins, where everything looks cobbled together yet oddly ingenious. The G-99 Breakneck has exaggerated features—like massive flames shooting from the scoop—which fit perfectly within the chaotic streets of Undermine.

Drifting, a traditional racing game technique, was one of the main elements we wanted to include in this feature. Although difficult, introducing this to World of Warcraft excited the team. Similar to the feeling of obtaining your first car and the newfound access it provides, we wanted to convey the sense of control and freedom.
In addition to being a vehicle, the automobile can accommodate passengers, enabling companions to join you and explore Undermine’s streets. Players can compete in races, putting their abilities to the test on both standard and reversible courses. We have made sure the experience is accessible for anybody who could suffer motion sickness or find the speed too fast by providing the choice to utilize standard ground mounts or to modify with a reduced top speed engine as soon as the car is unlocked.
Take to the Streets

But without a fun place to drive it, your new car would be nothing. These automobiles are racing all around you in Undermine, offering you a colorful background for your explorations as well as an invitation to join in on the mayhem. You can truly integrate into the community by taking on jobs like distributing hot towels or battling a spectral tiger that is obnoxiously frightening kids.
Undermine is a lively person, as you can undoubtedly guess. You will come across pirates, mobsters, guys who want to break your ankles, the best cooks you have ever seen, and a lot more as you drive your automobile through the streets (over sewers with fighting rings in them!).
Beneath Undermine’s fictitious sky is a vibrant metropolis that serves as a center of goblin trade and culture. In contrast to the typical city sceneries found in World of Warcraft, this one is crowded, vibrant, and teeming with life as people go about their daily lives.
The zone itself is evidence that more is possible. Undermine is a shining example of goblin ambition and inventiveness, with features like Slam Central Station that can transport you anywhere your mind will allow. With its many evocatively named landmarks, such as the Gallagio and the Incontinental Hotel, the city reflects a distinct, growth-oriented community.

The main theme of Undermine is improving one’s situation. With characters like Orweyna introducing players to the Ringing Deeps and the first few chapters of the novel, it connects to the main plot of The War Within. Characters like Renzik and Gazlowe, whom you will meet (or be reintroduced to if you have already played), offer you a glimpse into the lives of people who dwell in Undermine. Some characters, like Gazlowe, left Undermine in search of something else, yet others consider it their home; for some, home is anyplace but. There is no place like home for others.
Gazlowe changes his mind as the narrative progresses, sparking a revolution in which players can overthrow autocrats and free the streets. The story of the city’s recovery emphasizes the strength of the populace over repressive powers.
Come explore Undermine, a city known for its speedy cars and shady business dealings. Drifting is drifting, regardless of how much of an inch or yard you drift!
